Scoreboard Remainder
Scoreboard remainder names the gap between a settled outcome and the game that produced it. A score can be final while causation, contribution, desert, and later public meaning stay open. The term matters when clarity of result is mistaken for completeness of understanding. It differs from mere incompleteness because the remainder persists after a legitimate settlement; it differs from measurement error because the scoreboard may be correct within its rules and still leave the larger game unread.

Attention
Attention names the scarce gate between signal and response. It becomes important whenever more reaches a person or institution than can be fully tracked. It helps preserve focus and timely response, but can fail when visibility metrics are mistaken for judgments about importance. In When Incentives Become the Moral Language, attention marks the domain where newsrooms still know some stories matter even if they will not perform—yet operational language shifted toward clicks, shares, and time on page. Audience behavior reflects habit, outrage, and placement, not the same thing as what the public needs for democratic judgment. It differs from bias because attention names the capacity itself; bias names the selective work performed through it.

Concept
Compression
Compression reduces moral complexity for transmission at scale. Collapse gives way to compression, compression produces stabilization, and stabilization hardens into inheritance. When populations must coordinate across distance and strangers must share rules, compression lets expectations travel—law narrows discretion so the same words will be read tomorrow, canon fixes meaning so provinces can align. Compression is adaptation under pressure—instability demands it before truth is settled, acceptable interpretation shrinks while exposure widens. At its best, compression preserves coordination when full discernment is too costly; at its worst, tools built to compress instability begin to constrain adaptation, and compression outlives the conditions that required it.
