Private understanding
Private understanding names awareness that does not travel—diaries, whispered recognition, informal networks preserving clarity beneath performative agreement. It becomes important when expression carries extreme cost but moral clarity still accumulates. It helps preserve memory and refusal of erasure, but can fail when silence is misread as unanimity or when private clarity never translates into public pressure. It differs from interpretive collapse because understanding may persist; what fails is public interpretive function.
