The hard, unglamorous work of getting them all to one place — the dead Vesper gatehouse, reachable only the slow way. Lena's carriers come overland; word goes to the far side for Arin's stayers. Vesper is chosen because it is dark: the one place both halves can reach that belongs to neither.
