Sixty Seconds

A minute is too small to notice until we are waiting for it.

A microwave counts down from sixty while coffee grows warm. A traffic light lingers just long enough to make us wonder whether we should have taken another route. A child is told to brush their teeth for two minutes and counts silently until the task feels complete. Athletes lose races by hundredths of one. Parents discover that a single quiet minute in a house full of children can feel almost luxurious.

We experience time constantly, but we rarely experience its measurements. They arrive already assembled.

No one pauses over the number sixty. It feels as natural as breathing. There are sixty seconds in a minute, sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day. The rhythm becomes so familiar that it begins to feel like a property of the universe rather than a way of describing it.1

But the universe does not insist upon sixty.

People did.

Thousands of years ago, in Mesopotamia, astronomers spent their nights looking upward. The sky was more than beautiful. It was practical. The movement of stars guided agriculture, trade, religion, and governance. Predicting the heavens meant better harvests, safer journeys, and more orderly kingdoms.

To describe those movements, Babylonian mathematicians counted in sixties.

It is an unusual number, elegant in ways ten is not. Sixty divides evenly by two, three, four, five, and six. Fractions that become awkward in our decimal system settle comfortably inside it. A third becomes twenty. A quarter becomes fifteen. The arithmetic fit the problems they were trying to solve.

Their mathematics proved remarkably durable.

When they divided the circle into 360 degrees, they were not discovering a law of nature. They were creating a tool—a way of describing the heavens that made calculation easier. The circle itself remained unchanged. Only the language wrapped around it shifted.

The tool survived because it worked.

Centuries passed. Empires rose and disappeared. Religions spread. Trade routes shifted. Languages evolved. Mechanical clocks replaced sundials. Pocket watches gave way to wristwatches, and wristwatches quietly yielded to glowing numbers on phones that wake us in the morning.

Through all of it, sixty remained.

The inheritance became so complete that it ceased feeling inherited.

There have been moments when people imagined beginning again. During the French Revolution, reformers proposed decimal time. A day would contain ten hours. Each hour would contain one hundred minutes. Each minute one hundred seconds. The system possessed a certain mathematical elegance. It also possessed a remarkable disadvantage.

Almost no one wanted to live inside it.2

The problem was not arithmetic. It was civilization.

Time had become woven into everything else. Church bells, factory whistles, train schedules, astronomical tables, navigation, commerce, habit, memory. The measurement was no longer simply a measurement. It had become an ecosystem.

Changing it meant changing countless other things at the same time.

Some structures survive because they are better. Others survive because too much has grown around them.3

The distinction matters.

We often imagine progress as a sequence of improvements, each replacing what came before. But much of human history is less like replacing a house than adding another room. The old foundation remains beneath the new construction. It may no longer determine every choice, but it quietly supports choices we no longer recognize as historical.

The minute is one such foundation.

A software engineer schedules a task to run every sixty seconds without imagining Babylonian astronomy. A pilot adjusts a heading measured in degrees whose ancestors were drawn beneath ancient skies. A child learns geometry in school and accepts that a circle contains 360 degrees because that is simply what circles contain.

The numbers feel inevitable.

They are anything but.

There is something reassuring about this realization. The point is not that we should divide the hour differently. Our clocks function remarkably well. They coordinate billions of strangers every day. They allow trains to arrive, surgeries to begin, satellites to navigate, and conversations to happen across continents.

The inheritance has earned its place.

But seeing where it came from changes its character. The minute becomes less like a law of nature and more like a gift passed carefully from one civilization to another, refined but never entirely remade. The circle becomes not merely a geometric figure but a memory of people who spent long nights watching the sky and searching for order within its movements.

Perhaps that is one of history's quieter habits. It hides inside precision.

The more exact a measurement appears, the easier it is to forget that someone first had to imagine it. We mistake familiarity for inevitability. We begin to believe that because something is universal today, it must always have been.

Yet every sixty-second minute carries the trace of an older world—not because the Babylonians discovered time itself, but because they found a remarkably good way of describing it, and the rest of us never found a compelling reason to stop.

The clock on the wall does not remember them. It simply continues counting.

And we continue counting with it.
