Chapter 6 — Small Experiments

One of the most common traps in complex situations is waiting for a grand plan. We tell ourselves we need complete clarity before we move. In many real systems, that delay costs more than a small imperfect step would.

Small experiments are how curiosity moves forward without pretending to know everything. They are low-risk tests designed to learn quickly. Not big declarations. Not major commitments. Just deliberate probes.

If your commute is unreliable, a small experiment might be leaving ten minutes earlier for one week and comparing stress, not just arrival time. If team meetings feel unproductive, a small experiment might be testing a different agenda format for three sessions and checking whether decisions improve.

The first explanation for persistent problems is often "This is just how it is." Small experiments challenge that resignation. They create fresh evidence where assumptions had gone stale.

A useful experiment has a few qualities. It is specific. It is reversible. It has a short feedback cycle. And it asks a clear question: "If we change this one variable, what happens?" You are testing a practical question and gathering better evidence.

Many people resist this approach because it feels too modest. We are drawn to large transformations. But in complex environments, durable change often arrives through accumulated small wins. Each experiment updates your map. Each update improves the next move.

This is how exploration works in unfamiliar terrain. You move in measured steps, test footing, adjust direction, and keep moving with attention. Curiosity makes progress through contact and feedback.
