Chapter 1 — Why Being Wrong Is Useful
For years I treated being wrong like a small personal failure. If I guessed the drive would take twenty minutes and it took forty, I felt annoyed at traffic and quietly annoyed at myself. I thought the goal was to predict better so I could avoid that feeling.
Then I started noticing something strange. The days when my guess failed were often the days I learned the most. A missed estimate showed me something new about the system I was moving through. It was like the map in my head had a blank spot, and being wrong drew a circle around it.
A familiar example is the morning commute. Most of us form a quick mental model: leave at this time, take this route, arrive roughly on schedule. It feels stable because it usually works. But small shifts - a school holiday, light rain, one stalled car in the wrong lane - can change the whole shape of the trip.
My first explanation was simple: bad luck. Some mornings are just bad. That explanation felt comforting because it asked nothing from me. Unfortunately, it also taught me nothing. If every surprise is random, there is nothing to notice and nothing to improve.
Curiosity led to a different response. Instead of only asking, "Why was today worse?" I started asking, "What pattern might I be missing?" I kept small notes. I watched how timing changed flow by five- or ten-minute increments. I tested alternate routes without expecting a perfect answer.
Over time, a pattern emerged. The system was not random. It was sensitive. Small conditions pushed it into different states, and each state had its own rhythm. My wrong guesses were evidence that my previous model was too simple.
That shift matters beyond traffic. We often assume skill means getting the answer right early. In messy situations, skill often means updating fast when new evidence appears. A wrong guess can start better understanding if we treat it as signal instead of embarrassment.
The goal is to learn from being wrong. Once you begin seeing wrong guesses as information, you start looking at everyday surprises differently - and that is where curiosity begins to compound.
With that in mind, we apply the same move to a mundane frustration that turns out to be an excellent systems lesson: the grocery checkout line.
