Before turning to the complications introduced by scale, it helps to return to the setting where these ideas first felt clear. The framework developed in When Authority Outlives Accountability did not emerge from abstraction. It grew out of small, lived contexts—families, teams, relationships—where responsibility is uneven but proximity remains intact. In those settings, absorbing harm, limiting authority, and preserving contestability felt not only principled, but workable. This section revisits that human-scale model, not to idealize it, but to understand why it functions as it does. Only then can we see what changes when distance intervenes.
