Perception: What We Leave Out

Reality first pushes back through perception.

Before institutions fail, before organizations drift, before consequences return from a distance, someone has already overlooked something. A category has already stood in for a person. A measurement has already been asked to explain more than it can hold. A finished result has already been mistaken for the field that produced it.

Perception is not the opposite of truth. It is how people make a workable world small enough to act inside. Maps, scores, labels, averages, and stories are not failures of attention. They are forms of attention that leave something out by design.

The danger is not that we simplify.

The danger is that simplification forgets itself—and that what was left out continues living anyway.
