Before Certainty ArrivesPart II — Compression Under Scale
Part II — Compression Under Scale
Compression Under Scale
Scale changes what moral life must do.
The next three chapters follow that pressure across the Iron Age and classical world: Assyrian reliefs at Lachish making distant conquest visible in stone; exiles and teachers carrying law and ritual where shrines no longer held; Ashoka's edicts fixing moral obligation in rock that outlasted the emperor's presence.
Each case is different. The question rhymes: how does certainty travel when presence cannot follow—across provinces, across diaspora, across generations?
Part II follows compression under density, shared structural conditions, and writing as stabilizer. What once coordinated a room becomes what coordinates an empire.
When the roads fail, the archives still stand.
The roads between them did not.
